Dear all,

If you haven't already seen on the home page, the 1st meeting of 2010 is to be held on Friday 19th February at 7.30pm sharp. We know it's a Friday - but there's a very good reason why it has to be this date. You will all find out soon enough!

The location (and for all future meetings) is the prestigious Belmont Tower :-

Belmont Tower
82 Belmont Church Road
Belfast
BT4 3FG

And those of you curious to know what it looks like on the inside (and outside), just click on www.belmont-tower.co.uk to have a peek.

The venue is open from 7pm and we respectfully ask all those coming to be in their seats by 7.30pm as we want to start promptly. The meeting will be for 2 hours and we must vacate the building by 10pm. Because of the sheer amount of information and future projects to discuss, we won't be having a speaker - but there'll be time for a cuppa and cake!

Should anyone not a member wish to come along, you are especially welcome. There is a tremendous amount happening in the world of SS Nomadic and the more know about it, the better. Of course, we hope you will join once you here what is going on.

We look forward to seeing all of you once again - it promises to be a most eventful night.

Roo.

Dear all,

On the 19th February, we had our first meeting of the year - and what a turnout! Certainly last year was not a good one and after our last AGM, things looked exceedingly bleak indeed. However, despite this the society has regrouped and found its stride once more. The support and comments from our members were very welcome and encouraging - and it is clear, we have a lot of work to do now.

Now that we have a new 'home' for our meetings being Belmont Tower in Belfast, a restored Victorian church, we will be having 4 meetings a year with the next already booked for Friday 28th May at 7.30pm - so make a note in your diaries! Members overwhelmingly voted for meetings to be set on Friday nights, which is good as it suits English members of our committee.

NPS Structure
But anyway, to business. The structure of the NPS is changing and it was explained that members will be receiving 4 publications per year :-

Crow's Nest - our newsletter will be sent out in January and July

Lone Star - our main journal will be sent out in April and October

As stated above, there will be 4 meetings per year and they will be in February, May, August and November - however, with meetings being set for a month after receiving the Lone Star and Crow's Nest publications, there will be a reminder for the following meeting in these - so you'll have plenty of time to prepare!

Committee Changes
There were 3 new additions to the committee. Rupert Keyzar has returned and members David and Ruth Young from Fermanagh have joined also. I will be taking over the Lone Star from our Chairman, David Scott Beddard. David wishes to concentrate his time furthering certain high level projects and so needs to relinquish the Lone Star. I'd like to thank David for all his exceptional work on the Lone Star to date and I will, of course, continue to produce it with the same strong professional manner and approach.

David and Ruth Young will be taking up a dual role but this needs further discussion with them before we can announce what this is going to be - but because of their standing and strength of contacts, it will be a highly important role you can be assured. I would like to welcome them both and greatly look forward to working with them.

Charitable Status
We have recently received notification from HMRC that the society has now been granted charitable status. I cannot stress how important this is to all the work we are undertaking and for all future projects in the pipeline. This will allow us to apply for Gift Aid, bank charge reductions and the ability to apply for various special grants etc. Special thanks goes to Mervyn Pritchard for starting the ball rolling on this.

Heritage Lottery Fund and the Lifeboat
On the 19th February, an executive from the HLF and Michael McCaughan from the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum visited Petticrew Marine and inspected (and filmed) the panelling and lifeboat from Nomadic. Accompanying them were David Scott Beddard and David Lawrence of the NPS committee. This is the culmination of 18 months hard work by David Lawrence and is worthy of a book in its own right.

Both visitors were bowled over with what they saw and as the visit progressed, it transpired that the HLF are considering upping their original award amount. If successful, not only would this restore/conserve the lifeboat, but it will pay for all the required exhibition type material, a book, DVD's, PR etc. Quite some project I think you will all agree. They were especially impressed by the level of professionalism shown by the NPS in the handling of this issue. We thank them for their ongoing support and kind comments.

Like its parent vessel, the lifeboat's Conservation Management Plan was undertaken by Fred Aldsworth and like Nomadic's CMP, is a fantastic piece of work and has now been handed over to HLF in draft format as work to finalise all the details is still underway.

David Lawrence has a further meeting shortly with HLF and we will report here the final outcome once it is known. But suffice to say, things are looking very positive indeed.

Online Shop
After many weeks of designing, our capable Merchandising Officer, Frances James has completed our online shop and it is now open! There are many new products in there and many more are in the design stage or with the manufacturer, so watch this space.

It was a very successful evening and thank you to all our members who turned up. We will also be starting a major recruitment drive, talking to sponsors and various new high level bodies about the ship - all with the intention of promoting her and the project as a whole. This is going to be a great year for the NPS and we look forward to seeing you all again soon, both old and new members alike.

Last word, this is YOUR society - so if there is anything YOU want to see us do, add to the website etc., then please let us know. We had a few suggestions at our meeting and these will be looked into.

Remember, next meeting is May 28th!

Roo.
